This lens is ideal for video shooters and hybrid creators. The fast f/1.8 aperture gives excellent low-light performance and shallow depth of field. Its 17–40mm zoom range covers everything from wide-angle shots to standard focal lengths, making it useful for vlogging, handheld shooting, and gimbal work.

The lens features an internal zoom design, which keeps its length constant during use. This ensures better balance and stability on rigs. Focus breathing is minimized, so focus pulls look smooth and natural. Autofocus is powered by a high-speed linear motor, giving you fast and nearly silent operation.

Intuitive Controls

For added control, the lens includes two customizable AFL buttons. These allow you to assign key functions that suit your workflow. A focus mode switch lets you switch quickly between manual and autofocus modes. Manual focus is responsive, featuring precise control for critical focus adjustments.

Built for the Field

The front element has a water- and oil-repellent coating, making it easier to clean and resistant to smudges. The lens body is also dust- and splash-resistant, providing extra protection in tough shooting conditions.

A brass bayonet mount ensures a secure connection and long-term durability, even with frequent use.

Optical Design and Performance

The Sigma 17–40mm f/1.8 is constructed with 17 elements in 15 groups, including:

• 4 aspherical elements

• 3 Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements

This advanced optical design reduces aberrations, flare, and ghosting, resulting in sharp, high-contrast images. The 11-blade rounded diaphragm creates smooth, natural bokeh at wide apertures.

It also offers a close focusing distance of 11 inches, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4, giving you more creative flexibility for close-up work.
